A little over a year ago a group of enthusiastic readers got together to form an Inveresk Book Club (Grannus Musings by name!) Since then we have delved into a wide variety of novels, each title being chosen by the host of that month’s meeting.
Recently we read Joseph Knight by James Robertson. It was particularly apposite as the story centres around the lives and times of the Wedderburn family, one of whom lived for some years in Inveresk Lodge. It is a family saga of battles lost and won, from Culloden to the Edinburgh courts and is a revealing look into18th century attitudes to slavery and the defining qualities of “freedom” .
Follow our monthly choice of books on this website – and perhaps read and comment on them.
